Ashlee Simpson Ross is looking back on her debut album, Autobiography, which featured the fan-favorite hits “Pieces Of Me,” “Shadow,” and “La La,” among others.

During a Jan. 10 appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show, the 38-year-old “Pieces of Me” singer and younger sister of actress Jessica Simpson said it’s “so wild” that she released her debut album nearly 20 years ago.

“It’s been almost 20 years since you released your debut album. That’s a long time that’s passed,” Hudson said.

“Isn’t that crazy,” Simpson agreed. “It’s so wild to think that it’s been 20 years but then I look at my son [Bronx] and he’s 14 and I’m like, ‘well there’s that,’” she said.

Simpson also shared which of her three children asks to hear her old music.

“My daughter [Jagger Snow], she’s the one who’s like, “I wanna hear Mommy’s music,’ so I get to listen to [my old music] quite frequently now.”

Besides playing her music for her daughter, Simpson got to perform her 2004 hit, “Lala” (from her debut album, Autobiography) with pop singer Demi Lovato during the Los Angeles stop of Lovato’s tour back in September.

In an Instagram video Lovato shared, the pair could be seen wearing matching black outfits while they performed the high-energy rock song. “Thank you, @ashleesimpsonross!,” Lovato wrote, captioning the post with a flaming heart emoji.

“I had the best time with you! Thank you,” Simpson responded, adding a black heart emoji to her comment.
Simpson discussed the moment with Hudson on her show, sharing that she brought her daughter Jagger Snow along for the fun and dressed her in “a little rock outfit.”

“It was so fun to perform with Demi [Lovato],” Simpson gushed. “I was so flattered that she sang ‘Lala’ on [her] tour, and to get back out there and sing that with her, I love her. Her voice is so beautiful. It was just fun, fun energy. We had a really good time together. It definitely made me miss the stage and singing,” she added.

Simpson’s admission then prompted a very important question from Hudson: if she’s planning on releasing new music.

“I keep saying, ‘I’m coming out with an album, I’m coming out with an album,’ and now I have to, but then I keep having babies,” the singer revealed. “But now my baby [son, Ziggy Blue] is two, so now it’s time.”

“I can’t get over how grown up you are,” Hudson said, which earned a laugh from Simpson as she declared, “I’m not an angsty teen anymore!”

Although Simpson has not released any solo music since her 2008 album, Bittersweet World, she has been making music with her husband, Evan Ross, son of the iconic Motown singer, Diana Ross. The pair, known as ASHLEE + EVAN, released an EP with six songs in 2018 followed by a 2019 single, “Phases.”

In another clip of her appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show, Simpson admitted it’s “nerve-wracking” playing new music for her super famous mother-in-law.

“You know what? I think it’s nerve-wracking playing music for anyone when it’s new but definitely her because you’re like, ‘please like it.’ [I] definitely [have] butterflies. But she’s such a wonderful mother-in-law, so yeah, she’s very encouraging. She helped [Evan and I] on the album, too,” she said.

Simpson also revealed the Motown icon officiated her and husband, Evan’s wedding in 2014 before surprising them with a performance.

Ashlee Simpson Ross started her career as Jessica Simpson’s punk rock little sister. These days, she’s a mother of three married to singer and actor (and Diana Ross’s son) Evan Ross, but she still has a decidedly edgy style, which is reflected in her home. “I would say that we do have a Bohemian eclectic feel throughout our house. We love textures,” the “Pieces of Me” singer tells AD.

When creating a room for her son Ziggy Blu, whom she and Ross welcomed in October, “we really wanted the aesthetic to match the rest of our house” she says. They called upon Pottery Barn Kids for help, and incorporated rich wood pieces like the West Elm x Pottery Barn Kids Mid-Century crib and dresser and fun details like Urbanwalls Half Moons Wall Decals and neon lightning bolts.

The result is a space where the entire family—including Simpson’s 12-year-old son Bronx (with ex-husband Pete Wentz) and five-year-old daughter Jagger—love to hang out. Below, she tells us more.

Architectural Digest: What was your initial vision for Ziggy’s room?

Ashlee Simpson Ross: Having three kids, I realized that the clutter happens, so we chose to keep it more minimal. We also wanted the room to be something he could grow into. My favorite is the glider. It is rust, which is my favorite color right now. It has got this super soft material. With his crib and changing table, we went with midcentury, which I love. Then we did wall decals which brought a really fun edge to the room.

How is his nursery different from Bronx’s or Jagger’s when they were babies?

It is always interesting to see the different trends. With Ziggy’s room, Pottery Barn Kids has the most amazing faux sheepskin rug that I actually put in Jagger’s room too. They are so soft and cozy. With Bronx’s room, I went very Disney. It was my first kid. Then I realized he grew out of that room really fast. With Jagger I went very Bohemian, but she had a lot of stuff in it. But I loved her room so much. Ziggy’s room kind of has like a masculine bohemian feel.

Did your husband help with the design at all?

Evan is very opinionated—which I love. But it’s nice because we have similar taste. We get along.

Is there anything in the room that has proved more useful than you initially thought it would be?

Yeah! There is a daybed in here and I was like, Are we going to use this? But it is amazing. I love the daybed because Bronx and Jagger really hang out on there. So it kind of makes Ziggy’s room a place that everyone can come in and everyone has a place to sit and play. And we can lay him there. It is really nice.

Ziggy isn’t very old, but does his room fit his little personality?

It really does. This room has a zen feel, which is so nice. Every morning we are in here listening to music. I think the most important piece to have is a rocker. I am obsessed with our glider, it is amazing. We hang here, listen to music, get our Bob Marley on. His personality is very calm and happy. He loves music already.
